Musculoskeletal complaints have increased due to people working from home
Throughout the pandemic we have found an increase in musculoskeletal complaints, likely arising from make-shift home offices. These supposedly ‘temporary set-ups’, have spanned much longer than anticipated for some, leading to many seeking external support and ergonomic advice. You will find varying reviews from employees; some love the hours saved on commuting, whilst others resort to working from their dining room table. Nonetheless, it is expected that a large number of individuals will remain Working From Home (WFO) for the foreseeable future.
The common prediction highlights the need for ergonomically safe spaces, to prevent the occurrence of Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSI). This post will take you through a checklist of areas to adjust as well as some basic exercises, to assist with injury prevention.
Is there anything else I can do to prevent WFO aches and pains?
Studies have found that no matter how perfect your desk setup is if you stay in a sustained upright position for long periods of time, you will likely begin to experience aches and pains. Along with applying a blue-light filter to your screen or eyewear, below are a few more tips and tricks to maintain your health whilst WFO.
- Try to stand up from your desk every 30mins-1hour.
- Give your eyes a break by looking away from the screen for 20 seconds every 20-30 minutes
- Set yourself up away from the dining room and kitchen if possible in an area with adequate lighting.
- Try to maintain your health and well-being to keep yourself functioning to the best of your ability.
